1998-99年 ニューヨーク近代美術館他で大回顧展が巡回
2000年 芸術選奨文部大臣賞受賞

2006年 旭日小綬賞受賞
2009年 文化功労者
東京都在住。幼い頃から幻視・幻聴体験を持つ。渡米中に水玉や網をモチーフとした作品などを発表、一躍注目を集めた。
世界各地で展覧会が開催され、日本が世界に誇る前衛芸術家。
昨年文化勲章を受章し、国立新美術館で大規模展覧会が開催される。
かぼちゃ、水玉模様が有名で絵画、版画、彫刻、小説など多方面で活躍している。
